If a particular page on a website doesn't load for some reason or in case a link is not functioning, the site visitor will see an error page with a generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the Internet site, which may make the visitor leave your website. A likely solution in such a case is a feature offered by some website hosting companies - the ability to set up your own custom error pages which will have identical style and design as your Internet site and which could contain any text or images which you want depending on the specific error. There are 4 popular errors which can occur and they involve these particular so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your world-wide web browser sends a bad request to the hosting server and it can't be processed; 401, if you are supposed to log in to see some webpage, but you haven't done so yet; 403, if you do not have an authorization to view a specific page; and 404, if a link which you have clicked leads to a file that does not exist. In any of these cases, site visitors shall be able to see your custom content rather than a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Shared Hosting

You can set up custom error pages for any of your domains or subdomains. The function is supported by all shared hosting plans that we provide, so when you log in to your Hepsia Control Panel and check out the Hosted Domains section, you may click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up that will show up, you could select the type of error page that should appear - a default one from our system, a conventional Apache web server page or a personalized one. For the last mentioned option, you have to specify the URL to the page, so if you use custom pages, you must upload the files inside your Internet hosting account first. An alternative way is to use an .htaccess file located in the domain or subdomain folder with a line for each and every error type. The correct syntax can be located in our Knowledge Base, so that you can use this feature even if you don't have any previous experience.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers

All of the semi-dedicated servers which we supply support custom made error pages and it shall not take more than several clicks from your Hepsia website hosting Control Panel to use this feature. The option can be found in the Hosted Domains section of your Control Panel in which you will need to type in the links to the custom-made files using simple drop-down menus and an intuitive interface. Needless to say, you have to upload them to your account before that. If you do not need to use this feature at some point, you could deactivate it just as easily and pick an Apache server page or a default page from our system to be shown if your visitors encounter an error. If you prefer, you could also use an .htaccess file to allow the custom made error pages. The file has to contain a specific line of code plus a link for every error type and you may discover an example of the entire content for all four error types in our Help section.
